http://live.pirillo.com - Before there was the Internet, my Dad Joe had two computers. One was at work. One was at home. He would carry work home with him on a floppy disc. Dad feels that the floppy discs served an excellent purpose… extra backup of data.

The best method to backup data is simply use a NAS drive on network router or even buy a Windows Home Server. The cheaps method is NAS drives cost round in total £290gbp.00 or Windows Home Server from HP for £418.00gbp.

The best way to backup you’r files is to make a home data center using your old computers or if you have the money like me buy a server cabnet and some racks and buy 1TB drive’s for the racks…

Chris, make a batch file that is like
copy “c:\my documents\*.*” e:\backtup
Customize it to suit your needs!
call it BackUp.bat TADA! It automatically overwrites old data.
I am sitting here pulling my hair out like “I CAN DO THAT IT FOR YOU!”
I write free apps to make things easier for myself to do everyday things, thats my incentive! It’s not hard to program nowadays with all the FREE online guides/videos/chatrooms/books/help/etc. I whip up complex customizable applications in 20 minutes!

bought Acronis True Image and I like it. Can make a backup image of your system and put them in CD/DVDs or in an ext hdd. I also have Allwaysnc and that’s pretty nice to keep a mirror image of hdd/folders you want mirrored.

Wouldn’t using the Briefcase function of windows achieve what Joe wants? It could automatically copy his files to the external drive without him having to worry about it, plus it’s already part of windows. It saved my *** a couple of times in high school!

Foldershare is cool for automatic replication to another computer. Also Microsoft Synctoy does a good job. Both free.

Take a look at using Microsoft’s robocopy. I have created a batch file to robocopy (backup) files to another computer.

i think chris is wrong on this…….his dad is asking for a fair and worthy service..one click back-uping and chris’es answer is to drag and drop…lousy and doesnt fulfil his request!think on chris!chris should stop listening and start hearing away from his own noise

just get a drobo It’s a automated backup storage cube.

Acronis. It’s all you need.
Sure drag and drop works fine, but does that protect you from disaster of the OS itself? Of course not.
Chris if you’ve never tried Acronis, you should. More than one click like Dad wants, but once setup incremental backups / full backups keep the entire drive or drives backed up properly. Those backups can also be mounted with one click for easy access.

they should do fire proof hdd it would be cool
June 17th, 2008 at 11:15 am
AJenbo raid 1 setup is nice but if data corrupts or you get a virus it will be coppied on to both drives thats why its still good to have somthink like a USB or firewire hdd or usb flash drive

Backup is hard for me as I’ve got so much media (HD video) that for me to back it up, I would need a 2 TB hard drive to act as a backup. I wish I had a Mac Pro (four drive bays would be perfect for backing up)

For backup, have a raid 1 and have one of the disks as a draw´, that way you have a real time COMPLEAT backup of ALL your data and even improved read speed, then when you shut down you can take out the disk and be sure you have a safe backup.
