How can I turn an old desktop without network access into a USB data storage center?

data storage
CompArtist asked:

This computer has about 500GB of space and I would like to use it as a place to store data. However, I would like to make it accessible only via USB and not connect it to my internal network…is that possible?
Basically, is there a USB version of the commonly-known crossover cable that can connect two computers together for file transfer?

FAT went bad on a data storage firewire hard drive. How do I access the copy of the FAT to fix the original?

data storage
Zynn D asked:

This Firewire drive is used for data storage of school files and graphics. It doesn’t contain an OS. There is supposed to be a copy of the FAT on HDs for repair purposes. Computer recognises the drive (assigns letter), but It thinks the entire drive is in RAW format instead of FAT32, so when I try to access it, it asks if I want to format it. CHKDSK doesn’t work for RAW. Hooking this drive up to another PC results in the same.
